Greensboro, NC- American Friends Service Committee, Office of the Carolinas, announced today the upcoming visit of Matthew Hoh, a US military strategist, who resigned over US war policy in Afghanistan, will join dozens of Greensboro community leaders and organizations to call for major economic change.
Hoh was a key U.S. official in Afghanistan who resigned in protest over U.S. policy in the war-torn region, as the Obama administration deliberates its future strategy there.
Hoh has served with the US Marine Corps in Iraq and on US Embassy teams in both Afghanistan and Iraq. News of Hoh’s resignation was syndicated across the world.
The Greensboro Community Forum will take place Monday, February 20th, 6pm at Elon University’s Law School. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
Hoh will address the Greensboro audience with prospective on: A shift federal budget priorities; a transition from our war economy into a peace economy; Ways to address growing economic inequality in Greensboro and the US, and a broad effort to support local job creation and local economies.
Greensboro leaders will also speak to a growing number of urgent concerns including: High rates of foreclosure and the impact on children in Greensboro; 20% of Greensboro now live in poverty; A rising wave of homelessness and hunger; College tuition hikes that reinforces a widening
opportunity gap; Democratizing the budget process starting locally.
